One of the interesting tasks we ask our students to do is to – find a proper Chinese name. A formal Chinese name could be a great start for your Mandarin learning journey, as you can print them on your business card if you decide to put on a Chinese version; you can introduce yourself with your Chinese name when speaking Chinese; or simply just give yourself a chance to choose a name with meanings you like.

Most people would just choose a name based phonetic similarity, for example, David could be Dà wèi, Smith could be Shǐ Mì Sī, however, you could choose names with characters that have greater connotations, positive meanings. So we suggest all our students to create their customized Chinese names.

We recommend to our students couple of tools online to choose the names. Here is a guide:

1. Use Mandarin Tools or Chinese Tools to see some options suggested to you once you put in your original names. Most of the

2. You can watch this video, which gives you a clearer guide for doing so.

3. Tell your teacher what you want for your name, or just email us, we can suggest names for you for free.

Have fun!
