Chinese Language Tutor London

Are you searching for the best way to learn the Chinese language? If so, you’ve come to the right place! We offer language lessons through our Chinese language tutor London. We have some of the best tips to help you learn Chinese!

Many people study Chinese online; however, these students don’t improve as fast as students who take in-person lessons with a tutor or by travelling to China. The key is to study as much as possible to improve your language skills. And we’ve got tips to help you learn Chinese faster, as well as a half price offer to take a trial lesson with us.

Tip #1: Time Management

One of the best ways to learn with a Chinese language tutor London is through time management. This may seem like an obvious tip, but many people don’t use it.

Consider how long it takes to learn a new language like Chinese, but don’t think about the months or years that you will need to study. Instead, “think in hours” that are actually devoted to studying or practising Chinese.

Time management means ensuring you have time to spend studying every day. You must make time in your daily schedule for studying, reviewing grammar & vocabulary, and practising talking.

Tip #2 Intensity

Time and intensity are crucial to learning with a Chinese language tutor London. Remember that Chinese words don’t sound like English words, and they’re easy to forget after you’ve learned and memorised them. If you don’t regularly hear a word again, once you’ve learned it, you will forget it. Your previous efforts will have been wasted.

For best results, it’s best to repeat vocabulary words every day. You’ll need to do this for quite a while until the word moves from short-term memory to long-term memory. The time it takes for this process to happen varies with each student. However, our experience is that it can take six hours a week at a minimum. But to make real progress, you’ll need to spend 10 hours a week on vocabulary.

Tip #3 Get the Basics Down

A Chinese language tutor London can also help you learn the basics, such as tones. Chinese characters and grammar can be studied on your own, too, with the help of apps and books.

Get the basics down, and the rest will come a little easier for you, though we understand that Chinese can be a challenging language to learn.

Tip #4: Learn Tones First

Tones and pronunciation are essential when learning Chinese, and they’re also part of the basics you need to spend time learning. Grammar and vocabulary tend to improve over time, without intensive study. However, the same can’t be said of tones.

It’s best to put the focus on tones and pronunciation in the beginning rather than grammar and vocabulary. Tones are crucial to speaking Chinese. Without correct tones, no Chinese people will be able to understand what you’re saying.

Tip #5 Use Chinese, Everywhere

Studying is not enough; you need to practise your Chinese language everywhere, including with your Chinese language tutor London. This can be difficult when you’re not in China; however, it’s possible to practise Chinese by creating a Chinese language immersion environment at home.

It’s necessary to apply what you learn in your classes. However, don’t become frustrated when people don’t understand you. The most likely problem is that your tones are wrong. This happens even to the best students, so keep studying!

Tip #6 Have Fun with the Language

There is no better way to learn than having fun with the language. One of the problems of studying Chinese outside of China is that you’re less likely to have small victories. These can make you feel as if you’re progressing and your hours of hard study are paying off.

When you can order a dish in Chinese and have a small conversation with the school receptionist for the first time, you’ll feel these moments of success. They will encourage you to keep on learning and practising.

Tip #7 Get a Great Teacher

Working with a great Chinese language tutor London is another way to learn Chinese well. Your teacher will act as the main person to speak Chinese with. They can make sure you’re speaking correctly and help point out mistakes, keeping you on track as you learn.

Tip #9 Use Apps

Next on our list of tips for learning Chinese is this tip—use apps. With apps and a Chinese language tutor London, you’ll have the best of both worlds for learning this language.

Some apps only focus on characters and reading, while others focus on grammar, sentence patterns, and vocabulary. That’s OK! Using a couple of apps (or more) can help create overlap between your studies with the tutor and studying independently.

The flashcard system used in Anki and the online dictionary Pleco can be great places to start.

Answers to 10 Questions you may have

Our Chinese Tutors in London help over 1000 students each year to speak Mandarin! We do know what you are looking for, and how to help you achieve your learning goal.

It’s easy to learn Mandarin as a beginner, as you will be learning the very simple phonetic system, which composes only 490 syllabi! That’s why our Beginner students are the proudest of the achievements of their 0 to 1 step in just 10 to 20 lessons.

In your future total language skill training, it gets more challenging. But we know how to help you get there in each step.

Good question! If you are taking a part time learning approach with PM, we say 80 lessons upon completion of Intermediate course to achieve daily fluency. That could be 80 weeks or shorter if you chose to start with intensive beginner courses.

For an independent speaker level of fluency, we say two years upon completion of Upper Intermediate course. Be a good student, and we will get you there!

You can find the curriculum of each course on the respective course page on our website or our brochure.

We are using guidelines of official Chinese Proficiency Test called HSK to design our course framework.

Each course level will target different language skills training, ie Beginners for confident introduction and survival skills, Elementary for daily conversing covering common subjects, Intermediate for storytelling to narrate events, Upper Intermediate for discussion and debates to explain your reasoning and thoughts, HSK 5 & 6 for in depth discussion of society, culture and literature.

Let me try to use a very simple no jargon explanation – PM method focus on input, immersion and output.

You might find many language classes out there or learning apps only try to give you input, explaining how the language works to you, but at the end of the day, you felt like you learn something, but still can’t speak the language. At PM, each class is designed with a mix of learning, assessment and fluency skills output training modules. These training modules are unique here at Practical Mandarin, and are tested in many classrooms for targeted results.
