“My grandmother always jokes that she ought to have named me something other than fēi, which means ‘to fly’ in Mandarin. According to her, it’s as if she’d scripted my destiny to venture far from my hometown. And, in truth, I rather did. For the past ten years, I’ve lived and taught Mandarin in Beijing, London, and Cambridge. My approach is as diverse as the British weather, using a mix of audio-lingual, task-based, grammar-translation, and communicative methods. Besides teaching, I’ve been knee-deep in a PhD in developmental linguistics for the past four years. My thesis, still being revised, investigates how English- and Korean-speaking learners of Chinese acquire and process classifiers. If you should find yourself in my class, don’t be shy to ask me about the findings.”
